Plan routes in the Grid view

Last updated: October 9, 2026

Routes has two layouts. Cards, the default, lists each route as a card beside the map. Grid puts the day's routes in a table instead, with the focused route's stops in a second table below. The Grid layout suits teams that plan many routes a day and want to scan them in rows. It also adds a list of the day's unassigned orders, and you can arrange its panels to suit how you work.

Both layouts use the same map, the same routes, and the same actions. Grid is a different way to see the day. It doesn't change how routes are built, optimized, or dispatched.

Turn on the Grid layout

The layout is set once for your whole organization, under Settings ▸ Preferences.

  1. Go to Settings ▸ Preferences and find the General & formatting card.
  2. In the Routing section ("Choose the layout people see when they open Routes."), pick Routing UI: Grid. Cards is marked Default.
  3. Select Save changes in the card header.

From then on, everyone in your organization who opens Routes lands on the Grid view. That includes the Routes tab on the Orders page, the Routes tab of the Orders map, and links to the routes map. Clicking a route on the Orders map also opens it in the grid. A link to one specific route still opens that route's drawer as usual. To go back, pick Cards and save again.

Note

The Routing section shows only for organizations with routes turned on. Saving the Preferences card needs the Organization Management permission on your role. If you can't save it, ask an admin in your organization. Roles are covered in Manage users and roles.

The layout

The Grid view is made up of panels around the map. By default the Summary strip runs across the top. Routes, Orders, and Unassigned sit as tabs to the left of the Map, and Stops runs along the bottom.

The toolbar above the panels has the same date picker, Create route, Sort, and optimization activity filter as the Cards view.

Summary

One row of figures for the day and filters you're looking at: Routes, Stops, Orders, Unassigned, Distance, the planned or drive time, and % Capacity. Hover a figure to see what it counts. Select Unassigned to jump to the Unassigned panel. If not every route has loaded yet, a figure shows "≥" or "≈" to say it covers only the loaded routes.

Routes

The route table lists the day's routes, one row each, in the same colors as their lines on the map. Columns include Route ID, Depot, the driver and vehicle, Start Time, Planned Complete, Stops, Orders, Distance, Service Time, Size, % Capacity (with a capacity bar), Exceptions, and Route State. A route with no one on it shows No driver. When a route's times no longer match its stops, the table marks it with Times are out of date.

A Totals row at the bottom adds up the listed routes. Select a sortable column header to sort the table by it. Select it again to go back to the default order.

  • Select a row to focus that route on the map and show its stops in the Stops panel. Select it again to clear the focus.
  • Tick a row's checkbox to pick routes for an action from Route Actions or the bulk buttons (see Common actions).

Stops

The Stops panel shows the stops of the route you focused most recently. Until you focus one, it reads Select a route to see its stops. Across the top, a compact summary repeats the route's stop count, timing, and load, with Route details to open its drawer.

Each stop is a row: Seq, Location ID, Location Description, Arrival:, Departure, Service Time, Window Open, Window Close, Size, and Exceptions. When several orders share a stop, the window shown is the one all of them allow. If their windows don't overlap, the times turn red and a note under the table reads Windows at this stop don't overlap.

Orders and Unassigned

Orders lists the day's orders, starting on All orders. Use the filter in the panel to narrow it.

Unassigned lists the day's orders that aren't on a route yet, with Order ID, Customer, Address, Window, Size, and Status. Its tab shows how many there are. Orders that need attention are listed but can't be ticked. Hover the greyed-out checkbox to see Needs attention, so it cannot be added to a route yet. In the Grid view, unassigned orders also show on the map in the warning color.

Select a row in either list to pan the map to that order and pulse its pin.

Map

The same map as the Cards view, with the same layers, selection tools, and route lines. See Work with orders and routes on the map.

See a route's day as a timeline

The Stops panel has a Table / Timeline toggle in its header. Table is the default. Timeline draws the focused route's stops against one hourly axis, in the same time zone as the rest of the page:

  • A grey bar is the stop's window.
  • A bar in the route's color is the planned visit, from service start to departure.
  • A thin line is time spent waiting for the window to open.
  • A red bar and label mark a drop-off that arrives after its window closes. Arriving early counts as waiting, not late.
  • Dashed vertical lines mark when the route leaves and returns to its depot.

A legend under the timeline explains each mark. When a route runs past midnight, the axis labels the change of day. A route with no planned times yet shows This route has no planned times yet. Work with it from the table instead. Your browser remembers which view you picked.

Timeline rows have the same checkbox and drag handle as table rows, so everything in the next section works from either view.

Common actions

Reorder stops on a route

Drag a stop by its handle to a new position in the Stops panel, in the table or the timeline, to resequence the route. While a change to the route is still saving, its stops stay put until it finishes.

Move stops to another route

Tick the stops you want, either in the Stops panel or by drawing around them on the map. A bar shows N selected with Move, Priority, and Clear. Select Move, or Route Actions ▸ Move Stops…, to open the move dialog.

You can also drag stops onto another route's row in the Routes panel. The pointer reads Move N stops to that route, and dropping them opens the move dialog with that route filled in. Confirm there.

Set a stop's priority

Tick a single stop with a single order, then select Priority or Route Actions ▸ Set Priority…. This opens the same Sequencing dialog as Edit sequencing in the route drawer. See Edit a route.

Add unassigned orders to a route

In the Unassigned panel, tick the orders you want and use Add to route. Or drag them onto a route's row in the Routes panel. The pointer reads Add to that route, and dropping them opens the add dialog with that route filled in. Only orders that are ready to route can be added.

Resequence or time several routes

Tick routes in the route table to show the bulk Resequence and Calculate Timing buttons. They work as described in Resequence a route. Dispatched and archived routes are skipped. Bulk route actions aren't available to every organization. Availability varies by organization, so reach out to Nash for access.

Open a route's details

Tick one route and choose Route Actions ▸ Open Route Details, or select Route details in the Stops panel header. The route drawer opens, with everything in Edit a route and Assign a route.

Arrange the panels

  • Move a panel. Drag its tab to any side of another panel to split the space, or onto a tab row to stack it there. Drag the borders between panels to resize them.
  • Show or hide panels. Open Panels in the toolbar and tick the ones you want.
  • Use a second window. Summary and Stops can move to a second browser window. Choose Move Summary to second window or Move Stops to second window from Panels, or right-click the panel's tab. In the second window, Move, Priority, Route details, and stop dragging are turned off, and the panel shows Move, Priority and Route details are available in the main window. If your browser blocks pop-ups, allow them for the portal to use a second window.
  • Start over. Panels ▸ Reset layout puts every panel back where it started.

Your layout is saved in your browser, for you only. Teammates keep their own.

Tips

  • Work the day top to bottom. Check Unassigned in the Summary first, clear it into routes, then go route by route in the Stops panel.
  • Switch to Timeline for late drop-offs. Red bars show which stops will miss their window. Drag them earlier, or move them to another route.
  • Your role still decides what you can change. Moving stops and adding orders need a role that allows route changes. Setting priority needs one that can edit orders. Buttons you can't use stay greyed out.
  • Empty day? The grid says No routes for that date. Pick another day or select Create route. See Create an empty route.
